Cyberattacks Inevitable During Paris 2024 Olympics, Says French Prime Minister

In a high-level meeting on Thursday, France’s national cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, discussed the looming threat of cyberattacks during the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has warned the public that such attacks are “inevitable.”

France is committed to minimizing the impact of these cyber threats on the 2024 Paris Olympics, EU leader Attal emphasized. During a meeting with ANSSI agents and Secretary of State for Digital Affairs Marina Ferrari, Attal stressed the importance of preparedness on the eve of the Games’ opening.

“We are a target. There will be cyberattacks. The key thing is to limit their scope,” Attal told reporters at ANSSI headquarters. He reiterated this message on social media platform X, stating, “We are doing everything to protect the French, the millions of spectators from all over the world, the athletes, the sports sites, and our digital space. Our country is more than ever a target. We are ready to face it.”

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the security teams from France’s National Information Systems Security Agency for their dedication and expertise, which he said commands respect.

The 2024 Olympic opening ceremony kicks off on Friday, July 26th, and will run through August 8th, followed by the Paris Paralympics from August 28th to September 8th.

Earlier this month, the technology risks facing the Paris Olympics were underscored by a global tech outage involving cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which affected some operations of the Games’ organizers. The outage, caused by a faulty software patch, disrupted media broadcasts and left customers without access to essential services such as healthcare, banking, and major airlines including American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Air France KLM.

Air France KLM announced that the cyber outage would cost the airline nearly $11 million. CFO Steven Zaat projected a 10 million euro hit, equivalent to approximately $10.85 million USD. Delta, still struggling to restore full operations, has canceled over 6,000 flights since the incident, with analysts predicting its losses could balloon into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, the importance of cybersecurity measures is more evident than ever. France is determined to safeguard the Games, ensuring a secure environment for athletes, spectators, and digital infrastructure alike.
